Galleries, Museums and Cultural Venues
Manhattan

The Jewish Museum

The Studio Museum in Harlem
The nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by black culture.

Shrine World Music Venue
A multimedia arts and culture venue, founded in 2007 by musicians and music lovers in the music capital of Harlem, USA, Shrine World Music Venue is dedicated to art and culture in all mediums: film, theater, dance, and live music.
Shrine ’s mission is to establish a positive creative atmosphere for both artists and audiences from all backgrounds.

Nuyorican Poets Cafe
The mission here is to create a multi-cultural venue that both nurtures artists and exhibits a variety of artistic works. Founded circa 1973, Nuyorican Poets Cafe began as a living room salon in the East Village apartment of writer and poet, Miguel Algarin.

New York Times Lens
Get more out of the news you read. Space on the printed and e-page is often not enough to accommodate all the components that bring a story to life. Powerful images and sound bites enhance the written word in very impactful ways. The Times calls it visual and video journalism; Lens is their blog. SO amazing!

Lens is an equal-opportunity showcase of Times’ work as well as interesting visual and multimedia reporting from around the world. Be sure to check out their archive, too. It’s a storehouse of amazingness.

Travel – Necessity and Safety

Hollaback!
A movement to end street harassment powered by local activists in 45 cities, 16 countries, and in 9 different languages around the world. Hollaback! encourages women (and everyone) to share stories and provide data about harassment so locations where it occurred can be mapped.

Sit or Squat
A place to find and record bathrooms all around the world. Do not leave home without this link!

Gas Price Watch
Real-time prices are compiled by “price spotters” who list the name and location of the station, and the time the posted price was spotted.

Breathing Room in the City
Manhattan

Breather
Sometimes offices (or your apartment) aren’t exactly the most productive places to, you know, get work done. Breather can help you get some much-needed peace and quiet. Rent private studios around town for a nominal fee. Whether you need to prep for a major meeting or kill time between appointments, this is a far cry from the corner Starbucks!

And speaking of breathing room, check out these public spaces around the city. If you’re looking for a unique meeting spot, a place to have a nice quiet lunch, or to simply get some “me” time, stop in at one of these locations.

Keeping House & Home

Ask A Clean Person
Jolie Kerr is known for giving cleaning advice for unconventional and embarrassing housecleaning and laundry problems — without the judgment of the typical holier-than-thou housekeeping advice columnist. She is off-the-cuff humorous in her approach to dealing with all kinds of stains. Be sure to bookmark her column on The Hairpin.
